Protecting Developing Bees During Summer Heatwaves

Protecting Developing Bees During Summer Heatwaves

We get this question a lot, especially during summer heat waves or heat domes: How do I protect my developing bees if they’re still inside nesting materials?

As your developing bee cocoons are still tucked inside nesting material, they are hopefully stored in a spot that is regulated to maintain ambient day and night temperatures. Extreme (10-15*F above normal temps) summer temps can be dangerous to developing bees.

Here's how to keep your future pollinators safe and healthy:

Keep Them Cool (But Not Cold!)

Bring your developing bees inside for the duration. Consider placing them in a BeeGuard bag and storing them out of direct sunlight.

Once the Heat Wave/Dome is over

Move the developing bees to a spot that receives ambient temperatures. You want your bees to remain acclimated to your normal climate!
