Our Partnership with UC Davis, Targeting Houdini Flies

UC Davis Citizen Science Research: Help Us Track and Combat the Houdini Fly

We've got some big news to share with our bee-loving friends! We're teaming up with UC Davis to tackle the problem of Houdini flies that are spreading across the nation.

How We Discovered the Problem

Our journey with the Houdini fly began eight years ago when Dave first spotted this pest. He immediately took specimens to the Orchard Bee Association (OBA), where two Swedish experts identified it, confirming, "That's a Houdini Fly."

Five years ago, we escalated our concerns to the USDA and began working with invasive species personnel across Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Since then, the pest has continued to spread to other states throughout the US, creating a nationwide threat to Mason bees and their keepers.

What We've Tried So Far

Since then, we've been busy trying to find ways to keep these flies away from your bees. We've tested different scents to either attract the flies (to trap them) or push them away from bee homes. So far, these tricky flies have lived up to their "Houdini" name – they keep escaping our solutions!

Help Us Track the Spread

We believe these flies are spreading from unmanaged bee hotels in neighborhoods. When bee homes aren't cleaned or checked regularly, they can become perfect spots for pests like the Houdini fly to grow and spread.

That's why we're asking for your help! If you spot Houdini flies in your area, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page. Your observations will directly contribute to our research with UC Davis and help us develop better solutions for all Mason bee keepers.

Our Exciting New Partnership

That's why we're so happy to tell you about our new team-up with UC Davis! Together, we will:

  1. Track where the flies are showing up across different areas
  2. Figure out how fast they're spreading
  3. Work on new ideas to help you protect your bees

How You Can Help

While we work with UC Davis on bigger solutions, here are some simple things you can do:

Stay Tuned!

We'll keep you updated as our work with UC Davis moves forward. We're hopeful that by working together, we can help your bees stay safe from these unwelcome pests.

Remember, you're not alone in this fight – we're right here with you, working hard to keep your bees healthy and happy!
