Welcome to Crown Bees!

We help farmers and gardeners increase pollination and food production through the use of solitary bees.

Solitary bees are known to improve pollination efficiency and increase fruit set by twice that facilitated by honey bees. When crops are pollinated by mason bees rather than honey bees, farmers and backyard gardeners find themselves with more fruits and vegetables.

Through our collaborations with researchers and community partners, we've set the standard for best practices in solitary bee raising and have helped thousands of people across the United States and Canada grow fresh, healthy food.

To help our bee raisers be successful, we provide healthy hole-nesting bees and bee-raising supplies, along with quality support and educational programs.

Seasonal Timing for Mason and Leafcutter Bees

We are proud to provide healthy spring mason bees and summer leafcutter bees, specific to your ecoregion, to give both the customer and the bees the best chance for success! These bees are gentle and easy to raise, making them perfect for families with kids and pets, but they do have a few requirements:

  • Spring Mason Bees require daytime temps to be a consistent 55°F/13°C or warmer.
  • Summer Leafcutter Bees require daytime temps to be a consistent 70°F/21°C or warmer.
  • Bee houses must be placed within 300ft of flowers, vegetable gardens, or fruit trees for the bees to access pollen and nectar.
  • Yards and gardens must be free of chemicals or the bees may fly off in search of a more suitable nesting site.

A Guide to Safe Nesting Materials

Cavity-nesting solitary bees create nests in hollow or pithy stems. Many nesting species will also use man-made nesting materials, or cut pieces of natural materials. Crown Bees offers nesting materials that are sealed at one end, breathable, and that can be easily opened for harvesting cocoons. Using the proper nesting materials is the best way to protect bees from pests and diseases.
